Founding Team of Samari Utthan Sewa

Samari primarily refers to the ancestor of Musahar Community in Nepal and India. The name represents women from Marginalized community.

Samari Utthan Sewa (SUS) was established in 2008 by committed youths from the Dalit community. SUS is a dedicated civil society organisation (CSO) in Nepal, particularly active in the central and eastern Tarai and Chure hills across Chitwan, Sarlahi, and Morang districts. The organisation focuses on promoting social and economic empowerment of Dalit, Women, Climate Migrants and other ethno-religious minorities.

SUS recognises Mr Markku Voutilainen from Finland as an Honourable Member for his contributions to establishing the organisation. His pioneering efforts included initiating and personally overseeing the Uplift Project (UP) from 2005 to 2007. Following its completion, drawing from the practical experiences gained during a conflict situation and the inspiration from its results-oriented outcomes, a team led by Bimala Devi Gayak (See personal memoir of Bimala Gayak)—including former project staff—was formed to establish the organisation.

The five-year Strategic Plan (2023–2027)

SUS highlights the organisation’s proven approaches, such as its three-pillar strategy for sustainable livelihood and empowerment, which emphasises collaboration among community-based organisations (CBOs), cooperatives, and SUS to maximise impact for target groups. The plan also focuses on organisational values, a detailed analysis of thematic and policy contexts, new target demographics including young women and adolescent girls/youth, expanded geographies, and potential risks. Based on these elements, it formulates strategic priorities, implementation strategies, and expected outcomes.
