BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
Samari Utthan Sewa (SUS) is a non-government, not-for-profit social development organization. It was established in 2008 by a group of committed youths from the Dalit communities. SUS has been working with Dalit, poor, landless, vulnerable and other socially excluded segment of the society focusing on their basic needs and improving livelihoods, while also contributing to the process of empowering them to raise their voices for the cause of human rights, particularly for Dalit, Dalit women and Dalit Queer.
“Pursuing the rights and dignity of Dalit queer people with art and activism in Nepal” is a campaign promoted by SUS and led by Dalit Queer Nepal. The project’s objectives are to get support from a larger segment of the community and raise the caste questions in the queer movement. Additionally, the project aims to document the personal experiences, resistance, and hope of the Dalit Queer as evidence of the collective pride. SUS is seeking experienced and qualified consultants or consultancy firms for the assignment. Objectives of the Assignment
The main objective of this assignment is to document stories of Dalit Queer, their resistance, hope and personal experiences to publish for wider dissemination.
Location: The stories will be collected from all the provinces with a coordination of SUS and Dalit Queer Nepal campaign.
Duration of the assignment: The story collection will begin upon the signing of the contract, and the consultant will be engaged for a total of 15 working days.
DELIVERABLES
The consultant is tasked with writing 20 stories of Dalit Queer comprising 12 to 15 comprehensive narratives alongside 5 to 7 brief stories. These stories should be precisely written to meet publication standards and authentically represent the experiences of Dalit Queer individuals.
ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the overall supervision by the SUS, the resource person shall perform the following specific tasks:
- Document personal stories, including narratives of resistance, hope, and experiences, ensuring confidentiality and sensitivity.
- Build rapport and trust with Dalit Queer communities and individuals to facilitate open and honest sharing of their stories.
- Coordinate with SUS and Dalit Queer Nepal to align the project objectives and deliverables with the overall campaign goals.
- Manage logistical arrangements for data collection, including scheduling interviews, securing venues, and providing necessary resources.
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, coherence, and clarity in all documented materials.
- Respect the privacy and dignity of individuals featured in stories.
EXPERTISE AND QUALIFICATION
The consultant shall have the following expertise and qualification:
- Minimum of a Bachelor degree preferably in Communications, Journalism, sociology, anthropology or other relevant discipline.
- At least 5 years of knowledge and working experiences in writing/editing or related experiences.
- Exceptional writing, research, and communication skills
- Creativity and adaptability.
- Knowledge and experience relating to topics such as LGBTQIA+ community, sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics, caste-based discrimination, queer movement, existing laws and policies regarding LGBTQIA+ community.
- Strong time management skills.
