Parusan: A story of Madeshi Dalit in Pahadi Village
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Parusan Paswan, aged 33 a residence of Netragunj of Sarlahi. He went to school till grade six, then after he could not afford his education.

One day, he came in contact with Samari Utthan Sewa (SUS). It paid his school fees and provided him basic stationaries. Again he started his education and passed the SLC exams. After SLC, he joined Nepal Polytechnic Institute, Bharatpur with full scholarship from SUS. He also worked in a pharmacy and gained practical knowledge. Later, he served Bharatpur Hospital as a volunteer for eight months.

He always wanted to do something for Dalit communities. In May 2010, 70 houses of Bandarjhula, Chitwan burned down on fire and diarrhea outbroke in the village. Not to let it spread like an epidemic, Samari conducted a program at the village. Parusan also joined. He served one thousand and ninety-three patients. After that, he returned back to Sarlahi.

He was called back by SUS to Bandarjhula to work as an Auxiliary Health Worker (AHW) in the local Clinic. Due to the forceful displacement and poor health awareness, majority of women patients had womb infection. Patients with common cold, fever and diarrhea were plenty. That left him in surprise.

Then he came with an idea of expanding the clinic into government health center. It was not easy. Some steps would show hope and the others would not. But he never gave up. With support of Sawal Singh Thing, chairman of clinic management committee of the district office of public health approved his proposal. Two new posts, one ANM and one helping staff, were created. Pre- and post-natal services were provided. Then after he handled 5-6 delivery cases in a day.

Parusan has facilitated in connecting the people at Bandarjhula with quality health services through his efforts and activeness. But he accredits Samari, “My studies would have stopped at seventh.” Now Parusan is the in charge of government health center and the locals are happy to have him.
